Independence Is A State of Being

I’ve recently returned from my holiday on the beautiful island of Maui.  I’m taking liberty to borrow the term ‘holiday’ from the British as the glorious days spent there were in all facets of the word – a holiday.  I’ve been fortunate to have taken vacations in many beautiful locales, but Maui has given new meaning to where and how I spend precious days away in the future.  I plan a post detailing my trip.  But on this Independence Day, 2016, my thoughts are in a different direction – yet my recent days on the island have contributed greatly to my perspective on this July 4th holiday at home.

My habit is to set my DVR to record Good Morning, America each day and catch up in the evenings with all that’s going on in the world.  And unless you are one of those individuals who have tucked their head in the sand and decided you can take no more of the insanity and uncertainty happening daily, you know what a large dose of detriment to our psyches is being doled out.  For the sake of my point, let’s disregard media’s ability to steer opinions and consider only the headlines themselves.

Details aside, I have been watching for many months the devastating weather patterns that have ravaged our country from one side to the other, many perishing in the wake, countless others being robbed of all they own with no idea of how they’ll recover.  The horror of attacks across the world, both by terrorists on a large scale and by close members of victims’ own families on an even more hard to understand level.  The hatred.  Absurdities. And has there ever been a more head-shaking presidential campaign?

All of this and so much more is absolutely mind boggling.

Keep this in mind, and allow me to shift gears for a moment.

Before I experienced it for myself, Maui presented itself in my mind as one of the ultimate tourist destinations – think Disney World with the not-to-miss list of sights to see as the attractions.  From that visualization, take away the well paved parking lots with attendants to direct you.  Take away billboards luring you to exorbitant entrance fees.  Take away hearing sales pitches.  And replace all that with God’s green earth, towering vistas, and sparkling blue water as far as you can see from a vantage point that’s always just around the next corner.  Yes, there are resort areas – there have to be to accomodate those of us who sojourn there.  But the paradise that can easily be described in one word – Eden – is found on your own.  Out exploring the island.

And as I explored the island, I brought home a blessing that I was not expecting.  There is one side of me that hates the terrible things that are going on in our world today, that the tides of hate may dictate how the balance of my granddaughter’s future will pan out.  But there’s also the other side of me that has hope, a hope that I had lost sight of – and possibly never even had – until I was within the spectre of the intensity and power of the beauty on Maui.  That beauty is not man-made.  And neither is the Bestower of that power. Standing within the breathtaking awesomeness of just one small piece of God’s creation, I felt His power give me the confidence to know that I can be still and know that He is capable of providing the ability for us to rise above the insanities of this world.  And the beauty equips us to be partners with the positive, enabling us to carry on.

As we look for the beauties in our days, we need to remember that we are not entitled to the freedoms that we have.  Those freedoms have been and continue to be bought with the lives of many soldiers who are out there doing their jobs to ensure that we remain free.  It’s easy to get caught up in the monstrosities that plague our world today, to let them make us bitter, or complacent, or reckless, or I could go on and on with the symptoms of our weary world.

But we must make a choice.  We are free to make the conscious choice to see the beauty of this world and each person we come into contact with.   There’s beauty in each of us because each of us are also one of God’s awesome creations.  We are all fighting for independence in one way or another and if we can learn to see independence as a blessing and not a right – without letting hatred be our guiding force –  we will begin to see more beauty in our moments. Call me a dreamer, but I believe those moments will begin to spill over onto those around us and we can all be enablers of the positive kind.  There’s by far too much of the devastating negative kind.

So choose to be in an independent state of mind – rising above the awfulness of this world – replace the bad with the good – and never forget that there are those always giving their all, sometimes their very lives, to allow us this choice.

Happy Independence Day to you all!

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Tiger Den. They are what I needed also on this day. I have been overwhelmingly busy since I returned from my trip to Maui, and haven’t posted in a while now and it bothers me when I lose touch for a bit with so many of you who make my days, just as you have today! I hope it’s a wonderful day for you in many, many ways!

  3. As a travel writer and traveler and touring visitor to all fifty states by motorcycle. I rented a motorcycle on the Big Island of Hawaii. Your comments are impressively correct. My touring of the US National Parks to mark their centennial I encourage, all American to visit, tour, and explore the US National Parks. The simplicity in standing in the presence of the immense natural beauty can be overwhelming, and better than any Amusement Park, or 5-star hotel. Great posting. 🙂

    • Yes, you are so right! I do not have the opportunity to travel nearly as much as I would so love to do, but after my first visit to Oahu and the Big Island in 2004, the luxury hotels and amusement park priorities are a thing of the past. Nothing can compare to the natural beauty in our world. I travel vicariously as much as possible at every opportunity afforded to me!

  4. Where we place our attention determines everything for us. It’s such a very simple principle that I’m embarrassed to say that. What are we permitting into ourselves? For me the constant presence of God has always been vital. Yet most people seem not to have this at all? If, on any day, I can offer one ounce of Spiritual Love that touches anyone, that is a good day. I’d like to be better than that, but it’s a start. Thank you.

    • I very much relate to what you’re saying. I simply hope and pray that in light of the awful things happening in the world today, that those of us in the US who are not as acquainted with violence as those in other parts of the world, will take these current events to heart and learn to be gentler with each other instead of quick to rile and judge – blessed are the peacemakers.

  5. Very, very beautifully put. It can be so hard to detach ourselves enough from all the negative news, and sad stories to remember the beauty in the world we have been blessed with, and to raise our belief in that, more than the ugliness we see in the world but feel powerless to fix. I am glad that Maui helped you with this at a time you needed, and I look forward to reading more about your trip.

    • Thank you for your beautiful comment….I didn’t realize how quickly, of course, that needing the strength of that beauty would be put to the test as the next week we as a nation faced such violence and hatred. But I am so hoping that all of that was truly a wake up call for many of us – as I was out and about today, I know people were more apt to look and speak than normal.

  7. Came over on recommendation from my Mom, Latane at Living Life on Main Street. Wonderful post! And I love the format and layout of your blog. This is the way blogs should be. I admit to feeling overwhelmed by trying to stay abreast with so many people that I tend to get impatient with longer posts, sometimes, because I know I have so many others to visit. I feel like I don’t have time to read it all. Yet, I try…and I too have written quite a few long posts from time to time! Sometimes you just have things to say! 🙂 I have made so many wonderful blogger friends since I started blogging, and I miss them when I have to take a break, or they do. But there’s this thing called life, too, that we have to tend to. 🙂 I wish you all the best with your wonderful blog! I will visit when I can, and will follow you as well. I happen to be at a low computer-using point right now due to an upcoming move, but plan to be back in full force in the fall after my move! And I know I will enjoy a long relationship with you as a new blogger friend. All my best. Marie

    • What a wonderful comment! And as you can tell by the delay in time in my getting back to you in response – I do understand that we all have lives to live outside of blogging. I am trying to keep my blog life at the point on the scales where it’s a contributing factor to the level of joy in my days rather than a task to post and answer comments. It’s wonderful to hear from you in your understanding of this. I wish you the best in your move and will be looking forward to our talks together in the future!

  8. A wonderful Independence Day post! We are to “come out from among them and be separate,” according to God’s Word, and that does indeed bless us with great independence in spite of the insanity that abounds around us. What a glorious picture you painted of Maui. Carry it in your heart with you. God bless.

  15. Yes Tammi as you shared, all good things come from God and we give Thanks to Him and Praise for the wonder of His Creation. He does not afflict us or willingly allow evil but He is with us through it all.

Isaiah 43:1-3 – Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.”

Jeremiah 29 :11-12 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Lamentations 3: 33 For God doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

    Blessings – Anne.

  17. Thank you – beautiful!!
And praise God for the glorious freedom He has given us in delivering us from our sinful nature through Jesus Christ!! May all Christians truly receive the requisite Romans ch 7 humbling (“I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but cannot carry it out… What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!” – Romans 7:18-25) in order to truly walk in His resurrection power, FREE at last from our sinful nature, already crucified with Christ!! Hallelujah!

      • It is so humbling and astounding to be in Christ and to be known by Him. My prayer is that we ALL receive our Creator’s gracious gift of salvation through His sacrifice of His Son on our behalf. He not only forgives me my sins against Him, but He puts His Spirit inside me to enable me to live utterly dependent upon Christ, overcoming the inherent sin nature. Definitely supernatural!

        • It is True too Denna that we are to work out our Salvation not meaning work for it, God knows those who are His. We see in the Scriptures below and in others that we are to aim to be Perfected in Love as Paul and others have, putting our Carnal flesh to death (Romans 8 :12-15-Colossians 3:4-6 -Galatians 5:24 -26) and yes it is by The Holy Spirit but He does not go against our free will, we choose to be conformed into the image of Jesus, to walk in the Fruit of The Spirit and He empowers us to be able to.

As we seek God with all our heart He hears and answers and our lives will show His Perfection we will not continue to sin we have His seed (1John 3:9) We ask for His wisdom and empowering and Jesus our only Teacher leads us into all understanding, we don’t just sit back an wait to be sapped, Jesus said Ask, Seek and Knock.

1John 4:17-19 Herein is our Love made Perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in Love; but Perfect Love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made Perfect in Love. We Love Him, because He first Loved us.

2 Corinthians 7: 1 Having therefore these promises dearly beloved let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit Perfecting Holiness in the fear of God

Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore Perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is Perfect.

Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto Perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man/woman of God may be Perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Timothy 2:19-21 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let every one that nameth the Name of Christ depart from iniquity. But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be Perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in Peace; and the God of Love and Peace shall be with you.

Christian Love in Christ Jesus – Anne.
